Healthy Lifestyle and Environment: Influencers

By Kelly McCool, Trending Writer

Throughout the years, people have been told that they get the greatest nutrition from eating meat and dairy products. In recent times, it has been brought to attention that there are healthier ways of eating—one of which is veganism. There has been a recent influx of people who have switched to the vegan lifestyle and many celebrities are among them. Since a lot of celebrities are so open about this, many people have chosen to follow in their footsteps.

Actor Tobey Maguire—most noted for portraying Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s Spider-man trilogy—has been a vegetarian since he was seventeen years old (in 1992). Growing up, Maguire had never enjoyed eating meat and it was always difficult to get him to do so. He strongly disliked the way that animals were being treated and wanted to make a difference in the environment for these animals. On the set of The Great Gatsby film, he was even offered a free Mercedes, but he refused to take it because of the leather seats it had, knowing that an animal was hurt in the process. In a 2009 interview, Maguire revealed that he has chosen to become a full vegan to become a healthier individual.

Popular singer/actress Ariana Grande is also very well-known for her vegan lifestyle. In an interview, the 23-year-old stated that she originally became a vegan because of her love for animals—she claims to love them more than people! Grande also stated that she is “a firm believer full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person”.

Woody Harrelson, known for his role as Haymitch Abernathy in The Hunger Games series, is a very strict vegan. In an interview, Harrelson compares food to the fuel that people use to put gas in their cars. “Raw food is the best way to have the cleanest energy. We take so much care about what kind of fuel we put in our car…We care about that more than the fuel we put in our bodies. [Being vegan gives us] cleaner burning fuel”.

Lastly, Pamela Anderson is one of the biggest celebrity influencers of vegetarianism/veganism. The model/actress was seen in a controversial PETA poster in 2010. The poster featured Anderson in a bikini and compared her body parts to that of animals. PETA had this campaign to show that animals and humans have the same parts and should be treated with equal respect. On vegetarianism she says, “[Being] vegetarian helps me stay slim and healthy, and it gives me the energy I need to keep up with my kids, work, and travel”.
