Hasbro Retires the Thimble: Announces new Monopoly pieces

By Anne Szmul, National News Editor

Hasbro has concluded three weeks of voting to pick the new pieces of the classic board game Monopoly. Of 64 options, the top eight will appear in the fall in newly manufactured games according to the Associated Press.

Having not received enough votes, the iconic thimble, boot, and wheelbarrow pieces have been voted off the game. Current pieces including the top hat, cat, racecar, battleship, and Scottish Terrier will be included with the addition of the Tyrannosaurs Rex, rubber duck, and penguin tokens.

Other options included a hashtag, emoji, and a tortoise. The later came in ninth, just missing the finish line by 5,700 votes. The top dog was the Scottie piece, which came in first with 212,476 votes. IN last place came a rain boot.

Over 4.3 million people from 146 different countries voted on the next iteration of the game, introduced back in 1935 by Parker Brothers.

The game, based on streets in Atlantic City in New Jersey, was introduced during the Great Depression. It contained the original tokens of “an iron, purse, lantern, racecar, thimble, shoe, top hat, battleship, cannon and a rocking horse” according to the Associated Press.

A version of this article appeared in the Tuesday, March 21st print edition.
