We have seen entire industries radically change in the past few years due to a few key players drastically changing how things are done. Companies such as Facebook, Uber, Netflix, and Apple have revolutionized how we live our daily lives. In the past decades, massive companies have fallen due to their inability to keep up with changing trends, while others flourished. The differentiating factor often is the executive leadership of the company. Companies who have creative, unorthodox leaders, are able to truly think outside the box and find new paths to success. These leaders have also created similar environments in their companies that foster the creative spirit.
Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon, is a prime example of how a leader’s creativity can influence the entire structure of a company and the way it functions. What started off as an online bookstore in 1995, has since grown into a global empire. Amazon encompasses everything from retail sales, video streaming, and cloud computing services. Amazon’s success can be attributed to Bezos’ desire to continually innovate. He has three important lessons for innovators, which are: disrupt your own business before someone else does, innovate in another field with your spare capacity, and anticipate customer needs. It is with this philosophy that Amazon was able to expand into so many areas of business so quickly. Bezos’ creativity also led Amazon to creating initiatives such as Amazon Prime Air and Amazon Dash.
Mark Zuckerberg is one of the original tech success stories. From launching “thefacebook.com” at Harvard University when he was only 19 years old, Zuckerberg has grown Facebook into a phenomenon. Besides just acting as a platform for people to interact, Facebook has become a news outlet, a live streaming site, a place to advertise, a place to connect and so much more. Zuckerberg often tells his developers and team to “move fast and break things.” Without breaking stuff, the company and individual is not moving fast enough. Similar to Bezos, Zuckerberg realizes the great importance and forecasting trends occurring in the industry.
While both leaders are highly unorthodox, their companies have been massively successful due to their ability to think outside of the boxes. Creative, effective leaders can bring their organizations to new heights each and every day. These corporate giants have begun to reshape industries and change how business is conducted in a day to day fashion. They forced themselves to innovate, as much as those around them with whom they worked.
