Recently, actress Kate del Castillo has been called in for questioned regarding her connection to Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman, more notoriously known as “El Chapo.” Del Castillo is a prominent actress in Mexico, famous for her portrayal of a drug boss in the soap opera “La Reina del Sur”. She also played the role of Pilar Zuazo on “Weeds”.
Kate del Castillo was approached by the authorities due to communications made between the actress and El Chapo. The actress had formerly assisted in setting up a meeting between the drug lord and actor Sean Penn. Penn met with Guzman in October to write a piece about him for Rolling Stone magazine. Messages between del Castillo and Guzman indicate that, initially, Guzman did not know who Sean Penn was. However, he became interested in meeting with the actor after del Castillo assured Guzman that Penn had the Hollywood influence to help El Chapo in getting a movie about the drug lord’s life released. Guzman often spoke with del Castillo about his wish to have his life story presented to the public in such a way. Messages between del Castillo and El Chapo show that one of his main motivations for keeping in touch with the actress was for her to assist him in getting a film about him produced. El Chapo is quoted as saying he has, “No means to pay,” Ms. Del Castillo for her assistance in this endeavor, according to the BBC.
However, his reasons for keeping in contact with Kate del Castillo run deeper than the assistance she could offer him in setting up the meeting with Penn. Messages between Guzman and the actress reveal a level of infatuation the drug lord has with the actress. Guzman even gave her the code name “Hermosa” or beautiful, as reported by CBS.
The contact between del Castillo and Guzman ultimately lead to his capture. Through these messages authorities were tipped off to his location. Authorities then followed his lawyer, which in turn lead them to El Chapo.
El Chapo escaped from a maximum security prison six months ago and has been hiding from law enforcement up until his recent capture on January 8. Prior to his arrest, he had been Mexico’s most wanted man. He is now being held in Mexico with 24 hour surveillance to ensure his captivity. It is possible that he will be extradited to the US for prosecution in the upcoming months.
Although the actress has no known connection to any of El Chapo’s crimes, authorities want to know why she kept details of his whereabouts from law enforcement. Del Castillo is currently working in the United States, but Mexican authorities have said that she will be brought into their embassy for questioning.
The actress has commented on the situation via Twitter. According to CBS, the actress thanked her supporters, adding, “Many have chosen to make up items they think will make good stories that aren’t truthful.”
