The first weeks of the New Year saw the passing of a very inspirational actor, Alan Rickman. Aside from being an actor he took on other roles such as director. He was also involved in organizations outside of the film industry. Alan Rickman’s career was successful and as a result, is a very memorable one.
From a very early age, Rickman knew he wanted to be an actor. He stated, “There was an inevitability about my being an actor since about the age of 7.” While not his first role, his defining role was in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses where he played Vicomte de Valmont. Through his characters in films such as Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, he earned a reputation for playing villainous roles.
Aside from those earlier films, Alan Rickman has appeared in a variety of more recent movies. He played Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series and also appeared in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Alice in Wonderland. Despite his chief association as an actor, Rickman has directed a few movies. These include A Little Chaos and The Winter Guest as well as a one woman play, My Name is Rachel Corrie.
Rickman also took part in organizations off screen. He was the honorary president of the International Performers Aid Trust whose goal is to help artists and performers. It aims more specifically at helping them achieve a greater degree of success despite how much of a challenge it may be. He also made significant contributions to the charity Saving Faces, which researches facial diseases such as oral cancer among others.
Alan Rickman died just the other week on January 14th at 69 of pancreatic cancer. This came as a shock to many people as it seemed to happen so suddenly. His death was felt among those he worked with as well as numerous fans around the world. Among the list of those who paid tribute are Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, Daniel Radcliffe and J.K. Rowling.
Rickman has inspired people globally through his various roles. His work both on and off stage has impacted many people in a positive way. This can be seen through his many acting roles and his work with IPAT, among other things. Whether he is associated with Hans Gruber from Die Hard, the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood or Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series to name a few roles, he has left a lasting legacy. For years to come Alan Rickman will live on through his various characters.
