With the beginning of the semester moving quickly, the women in leadership had their first meeting on September 10 to go over their goals to make the Women in Leadership mentoring program a success.
Starting off the meeting was the chair of the initiative, Sumera Munhaf, giving a brief welcome to all the mentees.
She introduced the board, and announced what is planned for the year, reciting the goals which each mentee is expected to accomplish.
Munhaf then announced the important dates of the Kick-Off Dinner and a Breast Cancer walk. The Kick-Off will be on September 30 in the Chancellor Suite. It will be a great event to meet with all the mentors.
Also, the guest speaker this year will be Ida Castro. Castro was the chairman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and will speak about her various experiences as a professional.
The Breast Cancer walk will be on October 18.
Noel Girgenti, a senior in the program, then began speaking about the expectations of all the mentees.
She stressed the importance of meeting with a mentor and being considerate.
A relationship should be maintained, and in order to do so it is vital to call the mentor and go above and beyond for them, just as they would for the mentee.
Additionally, it can be difficult to come up with topics to discuss with a mentor; therefore, some senior advice was given.
The advice included keeping an open mind, taking advantage of the opportunities that a mentor presents, and remembering the importance of developing relationships based off of connections.
The Women in Leadership program is off to an excellent start and everybody is excited for a year of tremendous learning.
